Martial agent laughs at Wenger’s ‘winger’ talk

Anthony Martial’s agent has scoffed at Arsene Wenger’s reason for not signing Manchester United new boy Anthony Martial. Arsenal boss Wenger, earlier this month, claimed he had been monitoring the 19-year-old, but he was “more of a winger-type” and passed up the chance to sign the teenager because he was well stocked in that position. However, Philippe Lamboley, the man who brokered Martial’s record move to Manchester United last month says the player is a “true modern centre-forward”. He told RMC Sport: “Anthony is a true modern centre-forward who can play a part. I am surprised by the analysis of Arsene Wenger, who has apparently been following him since he was a teenager. “If the analysis Arsene Wenger has made is in order to justify not having signed Anthony, I accept he is a winger. But in football, there are those who follow players and those who buy them.” Martial moved from Monaco for a fee of £36m last month and that could rise to as much as £58m depending on his progress at Old Trafford. So far he has impressed, averaging a goal every 56 minutes in his appearances against Liverpool, Southampton and Ipswich. Martial has made such an impact in his first weeks in England he already stands on the brink of breaking several scoring records at United.

‘I never wanted to leave Liverpool,’ says Lucas

Lucas insists he “never wanted to leave” Liverpool, with the midfielder admitting his game against Arsenal potentially saved his Anfield career.

Brazilian midfielder Lucas was omitted from the Reds’ squad for their opening two games against Stoke and Bournemouth, and was linked with a move to Turkish side Besiktas in the summer transfer window.

However, he was recalled to the starting line-up by Brendan Rodgers against Arsenal last month, impressing in that game and proving his worth to the side since in the absence of captain Jordan Henderson.

Lucas admits that while he was frustrated due to his lack of game time at the start of the season, he “never wanted to leave” the club.

“I was very frustrated that I couldn’t make the squad for the first two games, but I had to keep training and working hard because we have a lot of examples where football can change in a moment,” Lucas told the Daily Mirror.

A disappointing 1-1 home draw with Norwich on Sunday leaves Liverpool lying in 13th in the Premier League table, but Lucas feels Brendan Rodgers and his side are capable of bouncing back.

“We have to keep perspective. It’s very early and experience has taught me not to get too carried away by victories and not to get too down after defeats.

“If we keep working hard, improving and picking up points, then we can still get to where we want to be.”

Watching Liverpool turn in another dross performance, I found myself over and over again wishing that Norwich just had a bit more quality in the final third to punish us. 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, all would have been ideal scorelines because I believe until we bin off Brendan we can’t improve. And we apparently can’t bin him off until we’re bottom of the table, so let’s hurry up and get there. The players have clearly lost confidence in something, and at this point wether it’s the man, the plan, or themselves is irrelevant – something has to change, and the easiest thing to change is the manager. Especially as we’ve already tried changing the players and the plan. I never thought we’d get top four, but now I can’t see us finishing in the top ten, and that really should be unacceptable. I think we’re coming up against the American mentality of our owners now – they have been raised on American sports, where the fundamentally different player recruitment system means any and all teams can go from dross to title challengers to dross and then back again within a few years. They don’t understand football doesn’t work like that, for better or for worse. They don’t seem to grasp that when we went from seventh to second we actually did something pretty close to impossible (Pulis and Palace’s 10th be damned) which cannot be repeated without Luis Suarez. Until they do grasp it, we’re going to get steadily worse as Rodgers flounders about for results but refuses the obvious improvements (e.g. Sakho, 4-4-2 diamond, or even loads of crosses into the box to make the most of Benteke’s head and hold-up play).

A key problem is that Rodgers wants to be Mourinho, but has nowhere near enough self-confidence (or ability) to do it – Mourinho, in Rodgers’ position, would bounce crosses off Benteke’s head all day long, and then when asked about it would deny changing his play style, then admit he has changed it the next day, then the next say something like ‘my style is to win’. Rodgers has become so afraid of criticism he keeps repeating the same passy-pressy game that worked with Suarez in the hopes that one of our players will magically become him – he has so little confidence in himself that he cannot bear to try something actually new, because that would mean admitting he has been wrong, and only deeply insecure people cannot face that.

Adidas is back with a fresh new addition of the Primeknit 2.0, and they are so confident in this one that they have labeled it the “best fitting boot in the world“. That is a bold and fully loaded statement, one that is sure to evoke interest from all walks of player – if it is true, of course! With new compression fit technology this concept boot is designed to lead the wayin terms of comfort and support.

Seeing as this is a limited edition release, with only 10,000 available worldwide, we haven’t been afforded the time to extensively test them out. Normally, we’d try get through a few weeks of wear to truly grasp the full extent of the boots performance. See this more as a summary review focused on the key fundamentals of the boot, intended to serve those that are considering buying a pair right now.

Initial Reaction

It is obvious that adidas has spent extensive time creating this latest version of the Primeknit. When the Primeknit FS was detailed last year, many jumped to the conclusion that adidas were gung-ho on releasing a high-collar style boot. That has been proven incorrect, with a higher heel adding the only level of focused support trough the ankle – but how is that going to feel through wear?

First Wear and Comfort

When it comes to taking them out of the box and your first experience with the boot, you will notice that they have a more synthetic feel than you probably expected. Considering there is a lot of talk about knit materials, it is a little confusing. But all of that outer material is included to add support and ensure the boot is durable. Slip them on your feet and the boot shape stretches from the inside out, so that synthetic feel disperses through wear and they hold a supportive, snug feel right through the foot – this is where the ideals of the best fitting boot in the world come into play!

That Tongue Design

We are still talking comfort here, and this is one of the key fundamentals of the boots design. Adidas employ a Lycra yarn across the midfoot and through the tongue. This ensures that both sides of the tongue are locked down with the layered knit and it provides an extremely snug fit. Slipping your foot in to the boot is easy to do, but that tongue design does create a very compressed feel through wear. Your underfoot feels fully connected and supported 360 by the shape through the region. I noticed that there were parts of my foot connected with the upper that I’d never felt on other boots. For example, my arch, where the Lycra sits completely flush. This is one of the unique aspects that creates a fit you won’t have experienced in another boot.

The Highest Heel In the Game?

I’m really not sure if there is a more visually prominent addition to any boot like the heel cut on the Primeknit 2.0. Ok, you could say the mid cut collar on Nike’s line-up is just as visual, but in play you could mistake them for socks. These are very unmistakable, almost weird. The shape goes about 2 inches higher than what we normally expect. Its intent is to provide support through the heel. In a general stance, it sits at an angle off the heel and it doesn’t touch until you are in a strike motion. Initially, I was concerned it could rub against the heel, but rest assured that it doesn’t. As you flex it, there seems to be a light spine feel that allows it to keep its shape. In a strike motion, it provides a little extra support to the Achilles region. Is it going to dramatically effect performance? Not at all really, in fact it seems to hold a more aesthetic purpose than performance. The one area it will prove useful is when defenders are chasing you down, nipping at your heels. Now you have an extra layer of protection to ensure that all important Achilles area is not harmed!

Touch and Control

There is definite texture through key areas of the boot as adidas allows the natural shape of the yarn to enhance first touch. As you rub your fingers across the forefoot and through the strikezone (any region with the mixed purple/lime/black yarn) you can feel the dimensional nature of the material. It is something that will help players that like to get on the ball and move at pace. Rather than sliding off the surface, you get a little extra cushion and grip to enhance overall control.

The “outer shell” across the zoned knitted upper is actually a lightweight vacuum coated skin. It is a sealed layer, almost like a micro-thin plastic material that helps protect the yarns and retain a soft surface, meaning the boot is at home in any weather conditions.

Serie A round-up: Milan and Inter share spoils, Roma held by Atalanta

Fallen giants Inter Milan and AC Milan remain mired in mid-table obscurity after Sunday's Derby della Madonnina ended goalless.

The second San Siro showdown of the Serie A season was not without incident, however, with both sides feeling the pain of having goals disallowed.

Milan defender Philippe Mexes breathed the deepest sigh of relief after his second-half own goal was chalked off due to a controversial foul from Inter striker Rodrigo Palacio.

The draw shuffles the Rossoneri and Nerazzurri onto 43 and 42 points respectively although their lowly league positions of ninth and 10th are unchanged.

Fifth place, the nearest European berth, is seven points beyond Milan's reach with seven games left.

Roma earlier missed a chance to reclaim second after being held to a 1-1 draw by Atalanta.

The Giallorossi went into the game knowing that victory would see them climb above city rivals Lazio, and Roma captain Francesco Totti put his team ahead from the penalty spot early on.

But German Denis pulled Atalanta level in the capital with a spot-kick midway through the first half.

Napoli closed to within five points of Roma and a Champions League place after cruising to a comfortable 3-0 victory at Cagliari.

Substitute Ishak Belfodil struck the equaliser as bottom-side Parma deniedEmpoli a come-from-behind victory in a 2-2 draw in Tuscany.

Francesco Lodi put Parma ahead but goals from Massimo Maccarone and Lorenzo Tonelli gave Empoli a half-time lead.

Belfodil then scored his first league goal since May 2013 to silence the crowd at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.

Bostjan Cesar's own goal cost Chievo an important win over Udinese as they drew 1-1.

The Flying Donkeys are trying hard to secure their top-flight status, but Cesar put the ball into his own net 19 minutes from time. Sergio Pellissier had fired Chievo into the lead six minutes before half-time.

In the early kick-off, Fabio Quagliarella's penalty rescued a 1-1 draw forTorino at after Domenico Berardi had given hosts Sassuolo the lead from the spot at the Mapei Stadium.

Gary Neville and Super Sunday pundits discuss Manchester derby fallout

Listen as Gary Neville and the Super Sunday pundits discuss all the talking points from Manchester United's 4-2 derby victory over Manchester City.

There was plenty for Neville, Graeme Souness and Niall Quinn to get stuck into, including United's impressive display and Manuel Pellegrini's future as Manchester City manager.

They also spoke about Yaya Toure's "dereliction of duty" and Michael Carrick's performance.

You cannot go to White Hart Lane, keep a clean sheet and come away with all three points and not have a defender picked out for commendation. That defender was Ron Vlaar. Admittedly there were some excellent supporting roles from Nathan Baker and goalkeeper Brad Guzan, but the Villa captain played a commanding role. His defence produced the goods when Villa needed it most.

What a goal by Aaron Cresswell against Stoke! It's the sort of goal that lefties can produce more often than most. Poor old Asmir Begovic gambled by trying to guess where Cresswell was going to put the ball and guessed wrong. By the time Stoke's keeper had taken one step to the right Cresswell had whipped the ball past him into the left-hand corner of the net. A fabulously taken free-kick by the full-back.

The win at Burnley was not one of Arsenal's most attractive performances but they got the result that keeps this fantastic run of eight straight wins going. At the heart of this gritty display by the Gunners was Aaron Ramsey. The Welsh midfielder was as resilient in defence as he was potent in attack. In fact he was the difference between the two teams.

I have spoken in glowing terms about Wayne Rooney's contribution to the rehabilitation of Manchester United this season but you cannot underestimate the impact Michael Carrick has had for United whenever he has performed. Against Manchester City he played with his usual authority and at a pace that suggests he is in a world of his own. There was not a City player who could get near him.

Brown impressed with Southend

Phil Brown praised his Southend team after they took the bragging rights over rivals Dagenham by easing to a 3-1 win at Victoria Road.

Ryan Leonard restored the visitors' lead after Ayo Obileye cancelled out Joe Pigott's opener, and Barry Corr's penalty wrapped up the points.

"It was a well-earned victory and a well-deserved victory to tell you the truth," said Brown.I thought we got what we deserved. We played good football, good attractive football, and the timing of the second goal was the key to our victory.

"The nature of their goal was a little bit sloppy from our perspective; there was a little bit of detail in our box that I should have sorted out, not the players.

"But we managed to get Ryan Leonard on the scoresheet and it was a long overdue goal from him.

"It was a great goal and I don't know what Wayne was complaining about, I think he said maybe there was a foul before it but I couldn't see it myself on the DVD.

"I am not sure if I went back far enough or not on the DVD, but it was some goal and we have been working with Lenny on hitting the target, but he didn't work the goalkeeper - he hit the back of the net."

Blues took the lead after 16 minutes when Pigott traded passes with Ben Coker, went past Scott Doe and fired beyond goalkeeper Liam O'Brien.

It did not take Daggers long to respond, though, as six minutes later Obileye scored his second goal for the club.

Billy Bingham's free-kick to the back post was met by the central defender and he headed past the returning Daniel Bentley to equalise.

With half-time approaching Phil Brown's team went back in front when Leonard volleyed past O'Brien from 35 yards out.

The second period got off to a bad start for Daggers too as Damian Batt blocked Luke Prosser's header with his hands and a penalty was given.

Corr stepped up and converted to put Southend two goals to the good, and it might have been more had the visitors not wasted some late opportunities.

Daggers boss Wayne Burnett was frustrated with the timing of Leonard's goal and admitted it changed the tide of the game.

"I felt we slightly edged the first half and they have got a goal deep in stoppage time in the first half," said Burnett.

"It was a very, very good goal, but disappointing from our point of view because I thought it was a foul on Shamir Fenelon. The referee has given it the other way and you have to deal with that.

"Overall I felt first half we were okay and in the game, but then they have scored and it changed the complexion of the game a little bit.

"It was a stupid decision by Damian Batt to put his hands up, but Luke Prosser is there on the back on his own and it is very disappointing.

"I felt Southend probably deservedly won the game in the end because they were better than us in the second half. We struggled to get out of our own half and they were the better team."
